Mi Existencia es Resistencia

Beyond its postcard charm, Viejo San Juan is also the beating heart of Puerto Rican protest. Its plazas and streets have become stages for resilience and resistance, most powerfully during the summer of 2019, when massive demonstrations demanding government accountability shook the island. Today, marches and gatherings continue to fill its historic spaces, writing new layers of struggle and voice onto centuries-old stone. For me, photographing these moments is deeply personal. Many of the protests center on protecting the identities and livelihoods of our most vulnerable citizens, and in that, my very existence becomes an act of resistance. To create and document in this space is to claim presence, to honor the struggle, and to affirm that Puerto Rico’s future is being shaped not only by its history, but by the people who refuse to be erased.
